COVID-19 India Updates: The country has been recording over 75,000 cases for the last four days. It took India 214 days to cross 36 lakh cases.

India reported 78,512 new coronavirus infections on Monday, slightly fewer than the previous day when it posted the biggest, single-day tally of infections of any country in the pandemic. With the record surge, the total cases in the country now stand at 36,21,245. An additional 971 new deaths brought the overall death count to 64,469, the Union Health Ministry said this morning. 27,74,802 patients have recovered from the infection in the country, taking the recovery rate to 76.62 percent. There are 7,81,975 active coronavirus cases in the country currently, which account for 21.59 percent of the total caseload, the Union Health Ministry data showed.

Here are top 10 developments in COVID cases:

  1. On Sunday, India reported 78,761 fresh cases, the highest surge since the first case was reported in the country in January, to take the COVID tally past 35 lakh. The country has been recording over 75,000 cases for the last four days.
  2. It took India 214 days to cross 36 lakh cases. The country has registered over five lakh cases in the last week. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh have been reporting the highest number of fresh cases.
  3. Maharashtra, the worst-affected state, reported 16,408 new cases and 296 COVID-19 deaths on Sunday. Nagpur, the winter capital of the state, reported 40 deaths while the state capital witnessed 30 fatalities linked to the virus. Pune reported 25 deaths.
  4. Andhra Pradesh became the second worst-affected state due to coronavirus in India as it surpassed Tamil Nadu, recording over 4.24 lakh coronavirus cases. The state reported over 10,000 COVID-19 cases for the fifth straight day on Sunday, taking the total count to 4,24,767 — behind only Maharashtra.
  5. Tamil Nadu has extended its coronavirus lockdown to September 30 but has also announced major relaxations, including resuming intra-state bus services from September 1 and Chennai metro services from September 7. The southern state has over 4.16 lakh confirmed cases. Of these over 7,100 are deaths linked to the virus and around 1.85 lakh are active cases.
  6. The government on Saturday announced guidelines for the fourth phase of unlocking, allowing metro services to resume from September 7. Lockdowns can’t be imposed outside containment zones, the states have been told.
  7. Social, political, academic, sports, religious, and other functions will be allowed with a limit of 100 people as part of the new rules from September 21. Schools, colleges, swimming pools, and indoor theatres will remain closed. This phase, called “Unlock4”, will be in effect till September 30.
  8. India, which has a population of about 130 crores, has tested over 4.23 crore samples so far; 8.46 lakh samples have been tested since yesterday.
  9. The recovery rate has increased to 76.62 percent, while the fatality rate has declined to 1.78 percent, the ministry said. The last five lakh recoveries have been recorded in only eight days in comparison to the preceding the same number of recoveries, which were recorded in 10 and nine days respectively.
  10. For every million population, India’s coronavirus cases and fatalities are one of the lowest compared to the global averages, the high-level Group of Ministers (GoM) on COVID-19 was informed on Saturday, news agency PTI reported. Worldwide, over 25 million cases have been recorded so far; over 8 lakh people have died.
