China – Pakistan Economic Corridor: China’s ambitious CPEC project is now seen to be stuck around its neck. China is alarmed by rising security concerns and costs in Balochistan. At the same time, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan News is chanting to complete this billion-dollar project.

Highlights

  • China worries over the rising cost of CPEC and security concerns, intensified attacks by militants in Balochistan
  • Baloch Liberation Army opposes CPEC project of China Pakistan, frequent terrorist attacks
  • Balochistan is strategically important for Pakistan, the special force created for CPEC’s security

China, which is dreaming of encircling India through Gwadar in Pakistan, has suffered a tremendous blow. The concerns of Dragon, who have already invested billions of dollars in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, have increased the safety and cost of the project. Due to the Coronavirus, the work of the project is progressing at a very slow pace, on the one hand, on the other hand, the attacks of militants in Balochistan have also intensified.

Pak army convoy attacked in Balochistan on Tuesday

On Tuesday, Baloch militants targeted an army convoy in Panjgur district. In which three soldiers were killed, while 8 others, including an army colonel, were injured. According to Pakistani media reports, this was the third attack on an army convoy in Balochistan after May. These militants are now expanding their attacks to other parts of Pakistan including Karachi as well.

The attacks did not stop despite forming a special force

Pakistan has set up a special force comprising 13700 special commandos to protect the project costing the US $ 60 billion. Despite this, attacks on Chinese civilians working in this project are continuously increasing. The Baloch Liberation Army’s Majid Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack on the Karachi Stock Exchange in June.

Many attacks of Baloch organization in 2018

In August 2018, Baloch Liberation Army militants attacked a group of Chinese engineers going from Gwadar via bus to Dalbadin, killing 3 people and injuring five others. In addition, in November 2018, the Chinese consulate in Karachi was also attacked by the group.

Therefore, many attacks were made against CPEC

The Balochistan Liberation Army has always opposed the China Pakistan Economic Corridor. Many times, this organization has also been accused of targeting Chinese citizens working in Pakistan. In 2018, the organization was also accused of assaulting the Chinese Consulate in Karachi. There are allegations that Pakistan took a decision related to CPEC without consulting Baloch leaders.

Balochistan is strategically important for Pakistan

Balochistan has a strategic position in Pakistan. Baluchistan, the largest province in Pakistan, borders Afghanistan and Iran. Karachi is also in the ranks of these people. A large part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor passes through this province. The Baloch also had control over the Gwadar port, which Pakistan has now handed over to China.

Preparation for strategic use of Gwadar

China is constructing the Gwadar Port in the Balochistan province of Pakistan along the Arabian Sea under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project and is a link between Beijing’s ambitious One Belt, One Road (OBOR) and Maritime Silk Road projects. It is believed. Through Gwadar Port, Chinese goods will easily reach the Arabian Sea. But in the event of increased tension, Beijing can also use it for military and strategic purposes against India and the US.

China invested $ 800 million in Gwadar

China is developing Gwadar Port of Pakistan under BRI at an estimated cost of $ 800 million. Although Chinese officials have been repeatedly saying that the purpose of Gwadar Port and CPEC is purely economic and commercial, China’s real intention behind this is to increase military dominance. Military experts say China may use Gwadar as its naval base.
