Registration fees and road tax will not be payable for the purchase of electric vehicles in Delhi. The Delhi government has launched the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy stating that electric vehicles will be exempted from registration fees and road tax. Not only this, but the Arvind Kejriwal government of the state also announced to give incentives ranging from Rs 30 thousand to Rs 1.5 lakh on these vehicles.
Keep in mind that Delhi is the only state in the country where registration fees are charged at different rates on diesel and petrol cars. According to the website rto.org.in, the registration fees in Delhi are currently divided into three categories.
1. If you buy a diesel car for up to 6 lakh rupees, then the registration fee has to be paid at the rate of 5% and 4% on the petrol car.
2. If the price is 6 to 10 lakh rupees, then 8.75% is to be paid on the diesel car and 7% on the petrol car.
3. If the price is more than 10 lakh rupees, then the diesel car attracts a registration fee of 12.5% while the petrol car at the rate of 10%.
How much is saved in registration fees?
In this context, if you buy a diesel car worth 5 lakh, then you will have to pay a registration fee of Rs 20 thousand while if you buy a petrol car. If you buy electric vehicles instead of diesel and petrol, then a huge amount will be saved in terms of category.
Since the Kejriwal government has also brought a policy for waiving road tax on electric vehicles, it is important to understand that road tax is charged on the basis of the weight of vehicles in Delhi. Let’s look at the charge by weight …
I. If the weight of the vehicle is less than one thousand kg then Rs 3,815, if it is up to 1,500 kg then Rs 4,880
II. Rs 7,020 if it is up to two thousand kilos

How much total savings including road tax?
That is, you are also going to save this amount by buying an electric vehicle. In this way, if you bought an electric car for Rs 8 lakh, then in addition to the incentive amount of up to Rs 1.50 lakh, Rs 40 thousand as registration fee and about 5 thousand rupees as road tax, i.e. a total savings of Rs 45 thousand.
These charges including MCD parking
Keep in mind that apart from registration fees and road tax, additional charges like MCD parking are also charged in Delhi. If your car is up to 4 lakh rupees, then 2 thousand rupees and if a car worth more than that, you have to pay an additional 4 thousand rupees. This amount is recovered in the form of parking charge, number plate and smart card charge. There is no mention of exemption in this policy.
Delhi government will also give scraping incentives
