A group of six Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, advocated furthering a UN ban on weapons on Iran, bypassing their internal conflicts. The current sanctions on Iran are set to expire in two months. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) said that they have sent a letter to the UN Security Council endorsing the ban on Iran.
Because of this ban, Iran cannot buy warplanes, tanks, and weapons manufactured abroad. The Gulf Cooperation Council consists of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The Council alleges that Iran has not stopped interfering with weapons directly or through organizations and activities in neighboring countries. They say that such organizations are trained on behalf of Iran.
Saudi-led coalition’s war with Yemeni rebels continues in Yemen. Regarding the Houthi rebels, the United Nations, the US, and arms experts have alleged that arms are supplied to them by Iran. Although Iran has been refusing to provide arms and essentials to the Houthis, Iran’s weapons are constantly found in Yemen.
Iran provoked GCC, condemned the statement
The GCC says that unless Iran leaves its activities destabilizing the region and arms supply to terrorists and divisive organizations, it would be unfair to lift the ban. According to a report by Iran’s state-run TV channel, Abbas Musawi, a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, has condemned the GCC letter and called it an ‘irresponsible’ statement.
Mousavi criticized the Gulf Arab countries, saying that these countries are the largest arms procurement countries worldwide and in the region. The United Nations banned Iran from purchasing weapons from abroad in 2010 amid tensions over Iran’s nuclear program. This decision has increased tensions in the Gulf.
