Ban on Huawei and other Chinese companies possible

In the senior ministers’ meeting, Huawei and other Chinese companies participated in the 5G spectrum auction. The auction of the spectrum has been postponed for at least a year due to the coronavirus. Other bidders like Vodafone Idea were also discussed in the meeting.

Deeply suspicious of being associated with the Chinese military

Huawei is banned in the US by the Donald Trump administration. At the same time, the US is also trying to have allies like the United Kingdom and India ban this Chinese company. There has always been a suspicion of Huawei’s founders colluding with China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Preparation for licensing on imports from China

The government is also looking to license imports of 10-12 products. Work was started about this several months ago but after recent tensions, it has gained momentum. Initially, it had products like incense sticks, tires, and palm oil but now it has included important products like air conditioners and television.

What are the preparations to reduce imports?

The government’s focus is to reduce the import of air conditioner and its components so that domestic production can be increased. Apart from this, steel, aluminum, footwear, potatoes, oranges are among the products which are ready to give incentives for local manufacturing.

Commerce and Industry Ministry prepared the list

The government has prepared a list of products whose domestic production is to be encouraged. This includes lithium-ion batteries, antibiotics, petrochemicals, auto, and mobile parts, toys, sports goods, TV sets, solar equipment, and electronics integrated circuits.

Imported by these methods

There are several ways to control imports. Sometimes the custom duty is increased, sometimes technical screws are implicated so that only certain products can be imported. Licensing is a technical approach. This allows imports from select countries to be approved. Also, fixed ports help in monitoring the goods at the entry of goods.
