Kulbhushan Jadhav Pakistan: Pakistan has finally allowed the Indian High Commission to have diplomatic access to Kulbhushan Jadhav. Indian officials will now meet Jadhav and sign a review petition against the death penalty.

Highlights

  • Conditional diplomatic access granted to India in Kulbhushan Jadhav case
  • Indian High Commission officials have reached the Ministry of External Affairs with lawyers
  • A review petition will be filed against Jadhav’s death sentence
  • Pakistan officials will also be present during the meeting with Jadhav

Pakistan has finally granted conditional diplomatic access to the Indian High Commissioner for the second time to meet Kulbhushan Jadhav, a retired Indian Navy officer in his prison. According to sources, after this, officials of the Indian High Commission have reached the Ministry of External Affairs with lawyers. In fact, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry had late Wednesday allowed Kulbhushan Jadhav to appeal against the death penalty. Now the Indian authorities will sign Kulbhushan’s reconsideration petition.

Pakistan has granted diplomatic access to the Indian High Commission for the second time. Pakistan has also put some conditions for meeting Jadhav. During the meeting, Indian officials and Jadhav will have to speak in English, and Pakistan officials will also be present during this time.

Pakistan gave the opportunity to appeal

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said late Wednesday evening that the appeal and review petition could be filed by Jadhav or his legal representative or India’s Counselor Officer in Islamabad. Earlier, Pakistan had said that Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian prisoner facing the death penalty, has refused to file an appeal in the Islamabad High Court against the conviction by the military court. However, India has termed Pakistan’s claim as ‘farce’.

What is Consular Access?

Please tell that in April 2017, the Pakistani military court sentenced him to death on ‘espionage and terrorism’ charges. A few weeks later, India moved the ICJ challenging Jadhav’s diplomatic access and the death penalty. In fact, according to the ‘Vienna Convention on Consular Relations’ treaty of the United Nations, made in 1963, if a citizen of another country is arrested on charges of espionage or terrorism, then he is allowed to meet his country’s diplomat Cannot be given. Pakistan was not allowing consular access to India on the basis of this because it claims that Jadhav is an Indian spy. However, India rejects this charge and therefore seeks consular access.
