Sources said that the backlog of Chinese goods at the port and airport is increasing. Even freight companies like FedEx and DHL have not been taking new orders since Wednesday. There are reports of Chinese goods being intercepted in Nhawa Sheva, the country’s largest port, and south of Mumbai.
“There is no written or verbal order from the Customs or Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to stop or accept goods from China,” said a tax official in Delhi. If some containers have been intercepted in some cases, there will be some intelligence and this will be done as a routine to reduce the threat.
A Chennai-based company reported that intelligence reports of illegal narcotics were received a few days ago. The officials are now strictly checking the importer’s papers. But this is not a normal process.
Meanwhile, some shipments to Pharma have been cleared on Wednesday after considerable scrutiny in Chennai. While large containers of other goods have not yet been cleared. Dinesh Dua, chairman of the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India, said Wednesday was a slightly better day for the pharma sector and some cargoes were cleared after scrutiny. This was allowed after talking to senior government officials.
