Malayalam poet-activist Sugathakumari dies of covid-19 complications
For the past one week, Sugathakumari had been hospitalised with severe pneumonia after testing positive for Covid-19. Doctors said she was suffering from bronchopneumonia, a condition that causes inflammation in the air sacs in the lungs.
Acclaimed Malayalam poet and environmental activist Sugathakumari passed away Wednesday following Covid-19 complications at the Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. She was 86.
For as far back as multi-week, the Padma Shri awardee had been hospitalized with extreme pneumonia subsequent to testing positive for Covid-19. She was on ventilator uphold after her body quit reacting to the medicine. Specialists said she was experiencing bronchopneumonia, a condition that causes irritation noticeable all around sacs in the lungs.
Sugathakumari was a persuasive voice in the field of Malayalam writing with her works gathering all the significant awards on the proposal in the nation. She was a beneficiary of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi grant, Kendra Sahitya Akademi grant, Odakkuzhal grant, Ezhuthachan grant among others.
The writer was destined to political dissident Bodheswaran, whose genuine name was Keshava Pillai, and Sanskrit researcher VK Karthyayini Amma on January 22, 1934. Abstract pundit and author Dr. K Velayudhan Nair, who died in 2003, was her significant other. They have a little girl.
She finished her schooling at Kerala University and Thiruvananthapuram University College, acquiring a postgraduate certificate in way of thinking in 1955.
Propelled by her dad who was a Gandhian mastermind, Sugathakumari made her entrance into social activism and was at the vanguard of the Save Silent Valley unsettling which had gathered public consideration during the 90s. Her sonnet ‘quiet valley’ mirrored her cozy relationship with nature.
She was the establishing secretary of the nature outfit Prakriti Samrakshana Samiti and ‘Abhaya’, a home for dejected ladies in Kerala.
She distributed her first sonnet in 1957. A portion of her striking works was ‘Rathrimazha’, ‘Ambalamani’, Paavam Manavahridayam, Swapnabhoomi, and ‘Pathirapookal’.
She won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi grant in 1968 for ‘Pathirapookal’, the Kendra Sahitya Akademi grant in 1978 for ‘Rathrimazha’, the Odakuzhal grant in 1982, and the Vayalar grant in 1984 for her work ‘Ambalamani’. She won the Saraswati Samman for her work ‘Manalezhuthu’ in 2012. She won the renowned Ezhuthachan grant in 2009 for her commitments to Malayalam writing.
Other remarkable distinctions that came to Sugathakumari were Ashan puraskaram, Vallathol grant, P Kunhiraman Nair grant, Balamaniamma grant, Lalithambika Antharjana grant, and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi partnership.
For her commitment to the protection of nature, she was granted the primary Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra by the Center. She got the Padmashri honor in 2006. She held the post of administrator of the Kerala State ladies bonus.
Her verse resounded with ecological issues and said a lot of her contempt for human impedance with nature.
