Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the ‘Legion of Merit’ by U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday for his role in advancing the India-U.S. relationship. The award was also presented to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. India, the U.S., Japan and Australia constitute the ‘Quad’ group of countries – seen as an alternative to Chinese dominance in the Indo-Pacific region.

“President @realDonaldTrump introduced the Legion of Merit to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his administration in raising the U.S.- India vital association,” U.S. Public Security Adviser (NSA) Robert C. O’Brien composed on Twitter.

The honor was introduced by Mr. O’Brien to India’s U.S. Representative Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who acknowledged it for Mr. Modi’s benefit.

“The President of the United States of America gave the most elevated enrichment, The Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21 December 2020. The honor is in acknowledgment of the Prime Minister’s relentless authority and vision for India’s rise as a worldwide force, and excellent commitment made by him for the headway of the India-United States vital organization and advancing worldwide harmony and thriving,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in an articulation.

Mr. Morrison has introduced the honor for “tending to worldwide difficulties and advancing aggregate security” and Mr. Abe “for his administration and vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific,” according to the NSA. The honors were gotten by the Australian and Japanese Ambassadors in Washington DC.

The Legion of Merit, initiated in 1942 by previous U.S President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is granted to individuals from the U.S. military and furthermore individuals from unfamiliar (i.e., non-U.S.) military and once in a while heads of state or government. The honor is introduced to unfamiliar beneficiaries in four classes: Chief Commander, Commander, Officer, and Legionnaire. Different Indians who have won the honor incorporate Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa who got the Legion of Merit (Degree: Chief Commander) in 1949 from that point U.S. President Harry S. Truman.
