It is being told that the epicenter of this earthquake was 11.18 miles east-southeast of Vau town. Tsunamis have been warned after this severe earthquake. Local people have been put on alert after the possibility of huge waves in the sea.
According to the American Geological Survey, the earthquake was at a depth of 85.2 km. The Tsunami Warning Center of the Pacific Ocean initially issued a tsunami warning but later withdrew after a few hours had passed. There is no report of any casualty or loss in the earthquake. In view of the earthquake, vigilance has been increased throughout the country.
Papua New Guinea has frequent earthquakes. Earlier, there was a severe earthquake in February as well. Its intensity was estimated at 6.2. However, no immediate tsunami warning was issued. The USGS reported that the epicenter of the quake was located 122 kilometers south of Kokopo, the capital of East New Britain province of Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 31 kilometers.
