Tamil Nadu: Gold worth Rs 45 cr goes missing from CBI custody, Madras High Court orders probe
The gold was seized by CBI in 2102 from the office of Surana Corporation Limited and was kept in the ‘safe’ custody of the central agency.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- The matter came to light when the Madras High Court ordered a probe into the missing gold.
- The state CB-CID has been asked to probe the matter.
In a curious incident reported from Tamil Nadu, over 103 kilograms of gold seized by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has gone missing from its custody. The estimated value of the yellow metal is said to be around 45 crores.
The issue became exposed when the Madras High Court requested a test into the missing gold. The state CB-CID has been approached to test the issue.
As indicated by a report in Times of India, the missing gold was important for the 400.5kg of bullion and trimmings seized by CBI during a strike at the workplace of Surana Corporation Ltd in Chennai in 2012.
The gold was held under CBI’s care at safes and vaults of Surana Corp. The focal insightful office keeps up that it had given the 72 keys of safes and vaults to Chennai Principal Special Court for CBI cases.
In its clarification to the court, the focal organization gave a strange reaction saying the gold bars were gauged altogether during the seizure. Notwithstanding, when it was given over to the vendor, the gold was weighed independently and that was the explanation behind the disparity. For this situation, the vendor was selected to settle the obligations among Surana and the State Bank of India.
The Madras High Court dismissed the CBI’s conflict and requested a test by a CB-CID official with the position of SP. The court has asked the CB-CID to complete the test within a half year.
The CBI told the court that its ’eminence’ would be in question if the issue is examined by neighborhood police. To this, the HC stated, “The law doesn’t endorse such a deduction and all police officers should be trusted and it doesn’t lie in the mouth of one to state that CBI has extraordinary horns where neighborhood police have just a tail.”
