Congress’s Rahul Gandhi became the first leader of the party today to openly criticize senior colleague Kamal Nath for his “item” remark on Imarti Devi, a BJP candidate for the by-elections in Madhya Pradesh. The comment has generated huge controversy ahead of the by-polls, with both the state’s ruling BJP and the woman candidate appealing to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for expulsion of the former Chief Minister.

On Sunday, while crusading in Dabra, Mr. Nath had focused on Imarti Devi, saying the Congress up-and-comer Suresh Raje was a “straightforward individual” not at all like his adversary who is a “thing”.
“For what reason would it be advisable for me to take the name (of the restricting applicant)? All of you realize that individual better than me. What a thing,” Mr. Nath said as the group reacted with cheers and recited her name.
